However, there is contradicting research, so the results are inconclusive. In order to study the effects of TV on sleep, I watched TV for half an hour before bed for a week straight, and recorded how tired I felt in the morning. I then recorded how I felt in the morning for a week without watching TV before bed. The results seemingly showed that I was less tired on average on the mornings that I didn’t watch TV. Still, there are many factors that may have altered how well I slept besides just the television. Therefore, these results are likely not conclusive. Introduction It doesn’t come as a surprise that the amount of televisions in bedrooms is raising. Methods The purpose of this study is to see if watching TV for a half an hour before bed has an impact on quality of sleep. For the first week, I will record how tired I feel when waking up without watching TV before bed. For the second week, I will watch TV for half an hour before bed, and then record how tired I feel when waking up. It is hypothesized that watching TV before bed will have a negative impact on the quality of my sleep, and thus cause me to feel more tired in the morning. The independent variable in the study is watching TV before bed; the dependent variable that is being studied is tiredness in the morning. During the first week, I will watch TV in my bed for half an hour before turning it off and going to sleep. Then in the morning, I will rate how tired I feel on a scale of 1-5; 1 being not tired at all and 5 being very tired. During the second week, I won’t watch TV for at least 2 hours before going to sleep. Then in the morning I will use the same scale to rate how tired I feel. Results I started the experiment on Sunday night, so Monday morning was my first rating. After watching TV for 30 minutes before bed on Sunday, my rating on Monday was a 4. I felt fairly tired. On Tuesday through Sunday my ratings were: 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 2, respectively. This data puts my average rating for the first week at 3. 43. This data is what was expected, as it appears that I was tired more often than not. On the second week, the results differed slightly, but the result wasn’t nearly what was expected. On Monday morning of the second week, my rating was again a 4. On Tuesday through Sunday my ratings were: 3, 4, 4, 2, 2, and 3 respectively. These results put the average rating for the second week at 3. 14. While the drop in average rating is noticeable, it is not as drastic as expected. Discussion The results shown seem to prove the initial hypothesis. It seems through this evidence that my average quality of sleep was better when I hadn’t watched TV before bed. However, these findings aren’t necessarily true. Although the experiment was conducted as intended, there were several problems that could have had an effect on the result of the data. For one, the data did not account for how long I slept on each night. While I tried to keep the amount of sleep consistent for each night, it wasn’t possible to receive the exact same amount of sleep. It’s obvious that the varying amount of sleep I had will have an impact on how tired I felt in the morning. Another possible issue was my stress level. Stress can play a role in how well someone sleeps. I wasn’t taking into account my stress level, but it’s possible that I was more stressed on certain days. In order to get a more accurate representation on how watching TV before bed effects sleep, an experiment like this would have to likely last several weeks longer. It would also have to take place in a more controlled environment, where the subject goes to sleep and wakes up at close to the same time everyday. The Lake Essay The LakeIt was early July and my friend Chad and I decided to join his family at the lake. Chads family was already up at the lake, and had some extra room in the condo. So we figured, what the hell, we could go for some boating. Right. The lake the only about a two-hour drive away. We were driving in Chads fathers convertible sports car, so the drive was quite pleasant. We drove through twisting canyons and long straight roads going just slightly over the speed limit. We arrived at our destination at record-breaking time, which didnt seem to make his parents too happy. Along with Chads family, which consists of four brothers and one sister, were some neighbor friends of theirs and their five-year-old son Nick. The rest of the day was spent miniature golfing and playing catch with Chads little brothers. On the following morning we went with Chads parents to rent the boat. We got the boat and loaded it up with the gear. We broke the family into groups so each one could have their own time on the boat. Our group was the one that wanted to ski, wake board, ride on the tube, and throw each other off the tube. The other group consisted of people that either didnt want to ski or were too young. All the younger kids were in this group. Our group was the first to have the boat. We spent hours and hours out on the lake and had an awesome time, even though I got one of the worst sunburns in my life. We returned with the boat so the other group could take their turn. As the second group left on the boat we decided to just go lounge in the swimming pool. After about a half-hour, Chads mom came running in and said they had an accident with the boat and that little Nick was knocked unconscious. We ran from the pool to see what exactly happened. Chads sister told us that another boat was traveling way too fast in the no-wake zone while not paying attention and struck the front of our boat. When the boats collided it took everyone a few minutes to notice that Nick was lying fa ce down on the floor of the boat. Panic arose when his mother noticed him lying there motionless. It turned out the other boat actually hit this little boy in the head when they collided. We were all in shock that something like this could happen. The ambulance arrived shortly after the accident and started to work on reviving poor Nick. I remember walking back to the condo with Chad, lightly joking about the situation, saying, wouldnt that suck if Nick died. We were sure he would be fine and awake with a horrible headache at anytime. Hours passed and soon we saw a helicopter that seemed to be flying really low. We then noticed that the helicopter was Life-Flight. We were confused; he just bumped his head, right? What do they need Life-Flight here for? That would describe Tycho Brahe, one of the more colorful characters in the history of astronomy. He may have been a feisty and interesting guy, but he also did solid work observing the sky and conning a king into paying for his own personal observatory. Among other things, Tycho Brahe was an avid sky observer and built several observatories. He also hired and fostered the great astronomer Johannes Kepler as his assistant. In his personal life, Brahe was an eccentric man, often getting himself into trouble. In one incident, he ended up in a duel with his cousin. Brahe was injured and lost part of his nose in the fight. He spent his later years fashioning replacement noses from precious metals, usually brass. For years, people claimed he died of blood poisoning, but it turns out that two posthumous examinations show that his most likely cause of death was a burst bladder. However he died, his legacy in astronomy is a strong one.   Brahes Life Brahe was born in 1546 in Knudstrup, which currently is in southern Sweden but was a part of Denmark at the time. While attending the universities of Copenhagen and Leipzig to study law and philosophy, he became interested in astronomy and spent most of his evenings studying the stars. Contributions to Astronomy One of Tycho Brahe’s first contributions to astronomy was the detection and correction of several grave errors in the standard astronomical tables in use at the time. These were tables of star positions as well as planetary motions and orbits. These errors were largely due to the slow change of star positions but also suffered from transcription errors when people copied them from one observer to the next. In 1572, Brahe discovered a supernova (the violent death of a supermassive star) located in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It became known as Tychos Supernova and is one of only eight such events recorded in the historical records prior to the invention of the telescope. Eventually, his fame at observations led to an offer from King Frederick II of Denmark and Norway to fund the construction of an astronomical observatory. The island of Hven was chosen as the location for Brahes newest observatory, and in 1576, construction began. He called the castle Uraniborg, which means fortress of the heavens. He spent twenty years there, making observations of the sky and careful notes of what he and his assistants saw. After the death of his benefactor in 1588, the kings son Christian took the throne. Brahes support slowly dwindled due to disagreements with the king. Eventually, Brahe was removed from his beloved observatory. In 1597, Emperor Rudolf II of Bohemia intervened and offered Brahe a pension of 3,000 ducats and an estate near Prague, where he planned to construct a new Uraniborg. Unfortunately, Tycho Brahe fell ill and died in 1601 before construction was complete. Tychos Legacy During his life, Tycho Brahe did not accept Nicolaus Copernicus’s model of the universe. He attempted to combine it with the Ptolemaic model (developed by ancient astronomer Claudius Ptolemy), which had never been proved accurate. He proposed that the five known planets revolved around the Sun, which, along with those planets, revolved around Earth each year. The stars, then, revolved around Earth, which was immobile. His ideas were wrong, of course, but it took many years of work by Kepler and others to finally refute the so-called Tychonic universe.   Although Tycho Brahe’s theories were incorrect, the data he collected during his lifetime was far superior to any others made prior to the invention of the telescope. His tables were used for years after his death, and remain an important part of astronomy history. After Tycho Brahe’s death,  Johannes Kepler used his observations to calculate his own three laws of planetary motion. When I first began considering a graduation speech, my initial impulse was to spend this time discussing the advent of college preparation at Ridgemont, and the rise of empty values. I thought it would be a good chance to point out the fact that the quest for college admission has ground some of the best people I know into pulp, and that for the most part it seems as though both their parents, and to a large extent the school, seem afraid to confront that system for what it is. I wanted to speak to the changes happening here at Ridgemont, that the focus of the school is being shifted from educating for character to trying to improve the efficiency with which Ridgemont can heard students into the Ivy League. It seemed to me that my entire fourteen years here had led to the final understanding that a lot of what we have been told to strive for amounts to little more than bowing down before Mammon. But, upon reflection, I realized that I would not be doing justice to the school and the class I love if I spent my time up here attacking the parents and the school in that manner. I really owe the school and my peers a lot more than that. If it were not for my Ridgemont education, I probably would never have seen the system for what it is. Ridgemont taught me to despise that system by showing me a better way to do things; by showing me that education, success, and happiness do not have to come at the expense of others, that I could go further if I learned to help, and to be helped, by those around me, rather than compete against them. Ridgemont's emphasis on process versus product will stay with me for the rest of my life. In order for the business to see success and make a profit it is important to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum. the business will focus on selling various types of candles i.e. scented, unscented, floating etc. our products bought from manufactured will not be sold as they are, they will be bundles and sold as gift packs for example. This methods makes the product unique and be able to make a profit. For example, 1 large candle will cost the business approximately 60p. If the product was sold as apart of a set of various candles i.e. sizes, colures and sold for  £5.00. This one candle may make a profit of excess of  £2.00. Researching into this product and market is important, so the company is able to forecast its success. It is clear there is a market for this product. The correct location is also important. As the products will be sold on a market stall, our company will see less overhead costs compared to high street stores. Above shows a table showing the sales of scented candles between 1996-2000. This is a strategy if the company has a strong market share in a particular market. Developing products are often a very expensive process. In this case, ASG04 does not have any market share, but with the product being sold are in demand and play apart of the market share in the UK. A business should try not to have any Dogs, but focusing on cash cows, problem child and stars that need to be kept in a kind of equilibrium. The Boston matrix model is a tool for assessing existing and development products in terms of their market potential. Our products lay between stars and soon to be turning into cash cows.
